Prince of Arabian Tales.

Jordan Mechner’s brief list of guidelines for designing story based games.

Considering Prince of Persia: Sands of time ranks as one of my all time favourite piece of Videogame literature, I’d listen to what he has to say. That’s right, I said literature, suck it. PoP: Sot was a master of using the available technologies, animation, art and gameplay to weave a spell binding story. It seemed to understand its limitations in drawing the player into its world, allowing for interaction, and never overwhelming with the feature creep of gaming conventions. Few games have come that close in the last decade. Though, Batman: Arkham Asylum could possibly be the next best step.
